Lovemusic talked to Dean Cameron, Distribution & Member Services Manager for PPNZ, owner of record label ElevenfiftySeven Records and IMNZ board member. With experience in a broad range of roles Dean is a source of industry knowledge for many. We talked to Dean about what an average day is like dealing with various roles & responsibilities...

What is your job and who do you work for?
I wear a few hats within the industry, but my primary role is at PPNZ as the Distribution & Member services manager. PPNZ is responsible for licensing and collecting income from the broadcasting & public performance of sound and video recordings then distributing this income back to the rights owners. Outside of this I also run an independent record label ElevenfiftySeven Records and sit on the board of Independent Music NZ.

What does a normal work day entail for you?
A normal day involves answering questions re copyright and the public use of music, liaising with local artists, record labels, broadcasters & dealing with a lot of data.

How did you get into the music industry – any specific training?
No specific training. I was always a music fan be it listening, going to shows, playing in bands. I just decided this is what I wanted to do and went for it.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Working in a industry that you are passionate about.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?
The business of music moves so fast. The last few years have seen huge changes within the industry and how we consume music. At times it can be tough to keep up with. But that’s half the challenge.

Do you have any advice for people who want to get into your field of work?
If it’s what you want to do - do it. Make contacts, learn the industry and attend any related seminars possible. Show potential employers that you are keen. Who knows where it could lead to?
